Mexicano tournament
Rules, configuration and management of a Mexicano tournament.
Mexicano is a tournament format similar to Americano, with one key difference: partners rotate each round based on the current standings. The leader plays with the leader, the last-placed player with the last — the system automatically pairs players to make each match as closely contested as possible. Every participant scores points individually, and the winner is the person with the highest total at the end of the tournament.
To start a tournament in this format, simply select Mexicano when creating the event. As in Americano, the key decision is setting the scoring limit — the number of points each match is played to. The combined scores of both sides in every match must equal this value.
Creating a tournament
The organiser panel shows the tournament settings: the scoring limit, the maximum number of pairs or players, and the type of competition. Mexicano supports fixed pairs (for example doubles or mixed) as well as an individual variant, where each player competes solo and receives a new partner selected by the system each round.
Tournament settings
The additional settings section allows you to change the tournament name, date and description. These fields are hidden by default and can be revealed using the 'Show additional settings' button.
Additional settings
The system displays information about the tournament field: the current number of participants and details about the number and distribution of rounds. In the fixed pairs variant this works the same as in Americano — with an optimal number of participants every pair plays in every round. In the individual variant players are paired into teams separately each round.
Field and number of rounds
Players can be added manually from the organiser panel. Unlike Americano, Mexicano supports optional seeding — you can assign a starting position to a player or pair, which influences the pairings in the first round.
Adding a player or pair
Instead of adding players manually, you can use the import function. Simply paste the list of participants in the required format and the system will process it automatically.
Importing players
Another way to collect entries is via an online form. The organiser shares a unique link with players, who can then fill in the form themselves with their pair name, phone number, and email address. Once submitted, the entry joins the pending queue and waits for the organiser to approve it.
Online registration form
Every new form submission appears in the organiser panel on the pending list. The organiser can accept or reject it. Once accepted, the player receives an email notification and the participant is added to the official list.
New entry awaiting approval
When the participant list is ready, the organiser checks a checkbox confirming that the list of present players has been reviewed. Only then does the draw button and tournament start become active. Pairs in the first round are drawn based on seeding position, and from the second round onwards on the basis of current results.
Player list — confirmation and start
Once a round begins, the organiser sees a match table with fields for entering results. Results are entered as two numbers separated by a colon — their combined total must equal the set scoring limit. The system notifies in real time once all matches in the round have been completed.
Entering results
After all match results have been confirmed and the round saved, the option to move to the next round appears. The Mexicano mechanism now kicks in: the system creates new pairings based on the current standings — the leader with the leader, the player at the bottom with a similar one. Each round becomes more evenly matched than the last.
Advancing to the next round
Going back to a previous round is possible, but it means the results of the current round will be deleted. This requires a separate confirmation by checking the corresponding checkbox.
The tournament can be finished after a minimum of 2 rounds. Finishing requires a checkbox confirmation. Once finished, the final standings are available in a combined table and a PDF with the classification can be downloaded.
Finishing the tournament
The system also allows a finished tournament to be reactivated, for example to correct a result from the last round or to add an extra round. This action requires the appropriate checkbox to be checked before the button is clicked.
